Classified Substitute: Paraeducator/Educational Assistant/Secretary
DESCRIPTION: Classified Substitutes are valued members of the HDESD Partner School Districts Community who play an integral role in supporting our students and schools every day. Working as a Substitute with HDESD requires a high level of flexibility and adaptability, as Substitutes are eligible to work throughout the region in multiple districts, multiple schools, any subject, and any grade level.
Classified Substitutes work a flexible schedule on an as-needed basis, and have the ability to assign themselves to jobs via the absence management online computer application system up to one month in advance.
The Classified Substitute shall assist the educator or building administrator in a supporting capacity. The role of the Classified Substitute is adaptable to many support tasks within the educational environment. It may include office and clerical work, delivery of specially designed instruction and related services, behavioral guidance and/or management, and/or physical management of students developed and directed by Educator(s) and/or Specialist(s).
Classified Substitutes can be placed in a variety of clerical settings, educational settings, classrooms and grade levels with variable hours (2-8 hours).
By becoming a Substitute with HDESD you commit to substituting in a minimum of ten (10) district absences over the course of a year.
Substitute Educator Duties:
- Performs a variety of clerical tasks in support of and preparation for the educational process as well as duties of instructional assistance to the teacher in a classroom setting.
- Facilitates the smooth operation of the educational program in one or more classes by attending to details which free the teacher to develop a comprehensive lesson schedule.
- Aids in preserving the unity of classroom advancement by tutoring students who have difficulty comprehending or who need emphasis on specific aspects of the instructional program.
- Participate as an effective team member in a manner that promotes collaboration for student success.
- Implement instructional strategies in the classroom and in on-campus learning environments.
- As applicable, assist with modification, development, and/or preparation of learning strategies, materials, and activities to accommodate different learning styles, ability levels, and other learning needs of students.
- Implement and modify behavioral strategies with students that are consistent with classroom and building behavioral goals.
- Carry out assessment activities to document information about learners.
- Provide physical assistance to students with disabilities which may include toileting, changing, feeding, lifting, and supervising a variety of student activities including playground, cafeteria, crosswalk, and bus loading.
- Assist in the health room when the nurse is absent by bandaging minor scrapes, bumps and bruises, handing out ice packs, or attending to more serious injuries while a nurse or doctor is called.
- Supervise lunchroom, classroom, hallways, and recess yards so that an orderly atmosphere is preserved; diffuse aggressive behavior, settle disputes and otherwise encourage well-mannered activity.
- May perform tasks specific to the attendance and registration of students such as roll call, parent contact of absent students, answering phones, taking messages, mail processing etc.
- Comply with all applicable district, state, and federal policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or the equivalent.
- Ability to use and access to current computer technology and equipment (e.g., phone, laptops, computer systems, applications, fax, copiers).
- Ability to learn to use current instructional technology, computer applications and software required for job assignment and reporting of hours.
- Ability to work with and lead students in group and individual activities.
- Instructional and behavioral management skills.
- Experience differentiating practices for diverse populations.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse students, staff, and community populations.
- Punctuality and reliability. Must have access to reliable transportation, and consistent attendance is required
- Physical Requirements: The ability to perform significant reaching, bending, stooping, crouching and lifting 35 pounds is expected.

PAY RATE
Classified Substitutes are paid hourly.
Minimum 2 hours to maximum 8 hours per day. $17.00/hour.
