Licensed Substitute Educator (Starting 2024-25 school year)

 

DESCRIPTION

Licensed Substitutes are valued members of the HDESD Partner School Districts Community who play an integral role in supporting our students and schools every day. 

 

Working as a Substitute with HDESD requires a high level of flexibility and adaptability, as Substitutes are eligible to work throughout the region in multiple districts, multiple schools, any subject, and any grade level. 

 

Licensed Substitute Teachers: 

Work a flexible schedule on an as-needed basis, and have the ability to assign themselves to jobs via the absence management online computer application system up to one month in advance. 

 

Are responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and facilitating student learning in the absence of the regular Educator. 

 

Perform under the supervision of a building administrator or other designated supervisor, and have the responsibility to continue the instructional program according to the directions left by the absent Educator. 

 

Function in accordance with all State policies, rules, and regulations, and in accordance with the performance standards of the District. Substitute Teachers can be placed in a variety of educational settings, classrooms and grade levels with variable hours (4 or 8 daily). 

 

By becoming a Substitute with HDESD you commit to substituting in a minimum of ten (10) absences over the course of a year. 




Substitute Educator Duties:

  • Implement and deliver instructions left by the absent Educator while ensuring the integrity of academic time. 
  • Provide instruction, organization, and management in the classroom, which creates an environment conducive to learning.
  • Manage student behavior and maintain a safe learning environment in accordance with school, district, and state policies, procedures, and laws.
  • Model and instruct students appropriately in citizenship and interpersonal relationships and responsibilities. 
  • Model educational equity for all students. 
  • Confer with the school administration staff or designated supervisor concerning the completion of any reports that may be necessary including but not limited to student attendance and performance. 
  • Confidentially communicate necessary information regularly to the absent Educator as well as students, colleagues, and caregivers regarding student progress and needs as needed. 
  • Supervise classified employees who are assigned to assist the absent Educator, classroom, or designated students. 
  • Display judgment that supports professional standards of conduct at all times. 
  • Maintain regular and prompt personal attendance in assignments and daily schedules. 
  • Comply with all applicable district, state, and federal policies, procedures, and regulations. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • At least one school year term of student teaching, intern teaching, or past teaching, coaching, or other educational environment work experience. 

 

AND: 

  • Licensed Substitute Teacher Resume and Application noting degrees achieved and institutions.

With either: 

  1. Active Teaching License Oregon Teaching License issued from the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC). If you have ever held an Oregon Teaching License, currently hold a full license in another state, or have completed a TSPC approved Teacher Preparation programs, you must apply for an unrestricted TSPC license prior to being considered for this position. Candidates will be responsible for applying and paying the non-reimbursed fees for the appropriate License through TSPC. If a TSPC license application is pending, please submit license application status with your application. 
  2. Active Nursing License 
  3. Active Counseling License 

 

AND: 

  • Ability to use and access to current computer technology and equipment (e.g., phone, tablets, laptops, computers, computer systems, software, applications, fax, copiers). 
  • Ability to learn to use current instructional technology, computer applications and software required for job assignment and reporting of hours. 
  • Ability to work with and lead students in group and individual activities. 
  • Instructional and behavioral management skills. 
  • Experience differentiating practices for diverse populations. 
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse students, staff, and community populations. 
  • Punctuality and reliability. Must have access to reliable transportation, and consistent attendance is required 
  • Physical Requirements: The ability to perform significant reaching, bending, stooping, crouching and lifting 35 pounds is expected. 



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience working with diverse student populations in an educational setting, coaching, training or mentoring environment. 
  • A commitment to promoting equity and belonging for all students. 
  • Basic to intermediate instructional technology proficiency with equipment used in educational settings. 
  • Ability to welcome and empower all students and families, including underrepresented families of color and those whose first language may not be English, as essential partners in student education. 
  • Behavior management skills. 
  • Solution-focused problem-solving skills. 
  • Emotional intelligence role modeling skills.

Candidates are required to complete a mandatory in-person orientation, annual training course, drug and background check screening and must follow all required background check procedures also required by the Oregon TSPC. 

 

PAY RATE: 

Licensed Substitute Teachers are paid based upon half days (4 hour shift) and full days (8 hour shift).The full (8 hour) day rate is $211.92, and the half (4 hour) day rate is $105.96.

The long term (10 consecutive workdays up to a 120-calendar-day period) Licensed Substitute Rate is $242.72.per day.
